Dead Meadow's new video, and those all important release details

Dead Meadow are releasing a new original film, live recording and five new songs in a set entitled 'Three Kings' on April the 4th.

They will be available on Double LP + DVD (which has to look amazing right?) and DVD + CD

The package consists of an album that stands alone with live material and FIVE new studio songs produced by Kille such as That Old Temple mixed by Dave Schiffman and mastered by Howie Weinberg. Temple is the first single and has an accompanying video. Dead Meadow have cradled the wide niche that resides between desert soaked 70’s fuzz rock and sonically ambitious indie rock for over a decade at this point. Members Kille, Jason Simon (vocals/guitar) and Stephen McCarty (drums) have released five studio albums, three of which were on Matador Records. The Three Kings is a celebration of the band’s lyrical mythos and is directed by Artifical Army, who in the past bent reality with videos for the likes of The Sword, Mars Volta and Coheed & Cambria.

Here's the video for one of the new track's entitled 'That Old Temple'

More details about the movie can be found at: www.deadmeadow.com

Trevor Moss and Hannah-Lou get eponymous on debut album

They release their self-titled debut duet album on the independent Loose Music label on February 15th 2010.

There's some live dates detailed down the right side of this page, which includes the Lantern Society's curated venue at the Camden Crawl.

'Concorde' Video:

Here's the spiel we all know and love...

Trevor Moss and Hannah-Lou are rare musicians. This formidable young husband and wife duo are redefining the modern folk musician. Their resilient and perfectly synchronised union of heart and mind hollers and sings in euphonious harmony, dancing elegantly with words masterfully placed.

In 2008 TM&HL established the thriving hubbub and forum that is ‘London’s finest folk club’, ‘The Lantern Society,’ which in 2009 also became the home of ‘Lantern Society Radio Hour.’ Hosted by Trevor Moss, this remarkable bimonthly show features the best live performances straight from their much coveted stage, interviews with the performers, and an ‘On This Day in Music’ segment.

The noteworthy result is the forging of a unique and definitive document, live from the frontline, of a constantly evolving folk scene, in which TM&HL have become pre-eminent and pivotal figures. To celebrate The Lantern Society’s 24th hour of broadcasting, we asked Trevor Moss and Hannah-Lou to guest edit this week’s Loose Music playlist. They kindly obliged, hand picking tracks that appear as part of their eclectic live sets. Selecting tracks from: Donovan, Woody Guthrie, Fairport Convention and Old Crow Medicine Show amongst others. You can tune it now via Spotify here - http://open.spotify.com/user/loose_music/playlist/4IKm456k1c35MyX2UfOl2G

They decided to become a duo after having released the highly acclaimed eponymous album ‘Indigo Moss’ with their band in 2007 on Simon Tong (Verve/Gorillaz/The Good The Bad and The Queen) and uber-producer Youth’s Butterfly Recordings label. Touring nationally and receiving high billing at some of the country’s most prestigious festivals, including Green Man, Secret Garden Party, and End of the Road, a high profile national support tour with Albarn’s supergroup followed. Argued by many to be the forerunning album to the current mainstream folk and bluegrass revival, three singles were released off the debut record, gaining the song-writing partnership much national radio play. Consecutive singles achieved record of the week status on BBC Radio 2’s Radcliffe and Maconie, and Phil Jupitus shows. A rooftop performance on the Queen Elizabeth Hall, and a show at Le Centre Pénitentiaire pour Femmes de Rennes, France’s largest maximum security women’s prison, were highlights of the short but illustrious career of TM&HL’s ‘Indigo Moss.’

Trevor Moss and Hannah-Lou have also been invited to be committee members for the Camden Crawl 2010, representing folk, country and roots music at the festival. Anyone who’s ever been will know that it is a mammoth operation, defining the music of the capital. Full line-up details to follow early next year.

The Lantern Society takes place at the Betsey Trotwood, Farringdon Rd, London. EC1R 3BL. Every 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month. The Lantern Society Radio Hour is available for free subscription at iTunes and via their website. Trevor Moss and Hannah-Lou will be taking The Lantern Society on tour in the coming months - towns/venues/dates etc will be announced very soon.

Bass Clef's excellent new record is coming out on February 15th. It's called ‘May the Bridges I Burn Light the Way’

It's coming out on Blank Tapes and luckily for you there's a free download of 'Kiss Me' from the new record, available from RCRDLBL.com

Click here to go to RCRDLBL.com

Here's the press release for the interested parties...

Blank Tapes is proud to present May the Bridges I Burn Light the Way (BLANK011), the new album from Ralph Cumbers – aka Bass Clef.

Picking up where 2006’s A Smile is a Curve that Straightens Most Things left off, Ralph doesn’t expand on so much as multiply the sound of that album. Starting with the same raw material of bass and beats assembled on four-track cassette (if it was good enough for Lee Perry…), Bass Clef has stepped out of E8 city limits and into the studio to add African percussion, This Heat-style drum freak-outs, and the usual riot of trombone, Theremin and cowbell familiar to anyone who has experienced Bass Clef live.

‘Promises’ and ‘Kiss Me’ extract memories and desires and turn them into eye contact; lovers rock and dub dread meeting at midnight on Mare Street. May The Bridges… still bristles and twitches in the echo chamber of Bass Clef’s ‘dubstep (not dubstep)’ – as Plan B magazine called it – but this new LP is a darker, wider, scarier, and altogether bigger space. An arc of UK roots street music is lurking in the corners: On-U, Blue Lines, the sound of the bedroom aerial finding its frequency today. But most significantly, all those bridges have been burned. Follow the Bass Clef light deep into the night… eyes open or shut, the light will shine.

Following countless club appearances at Big Chill, Sonar, Fabric, Bloc Weekend the Bass Clef one-man soundsystem is now in full effect across the globe with debut shows in Australia and a full EU tour 2010. Standout cut ‘Promises’ has garnered radio play from Huw Stephens, Mary Anne Hobbs & Trevor Nelson already and has yet to be promo’d.

2009 Review: Part Three, Woody

Woody works on national and Student press and is a production runner for ATP festivals. Also runs his own shows in London and his home town of Norwich.

Gigs of the Year:

Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds at Latitude 2009 - The band rocked harder than any I have seen in recent years and got me dancing in ways I remember only from my youthful youth.

Boredoms performing 9 Drummer Boardrum in ATP NY - One of the drummers lifted to the stage on a riser through the crowd, massive 6 guitar setups and some of the most incredible drum work I have and doubtless will ever see.

Albums of the Year:

St. Vincent - I love this record, gorgeous melodic sections backed up by some excellent beats and heavy guitar work you just don't see coming. Give 'Marrow' a spin and see what I mean

Bear In Heaven - Forget the new wave of jangly 80s crap, this album has the big drum sounds, the melodies and the huge scope, but fails to be nothing less than awesome in any way.

Disappointment(s) of the Year

My Bloody Valentine - Well done for getting in the spirit guys!

Most Ridiculous Moment of the Year

ATP New York, the whole thing was just ridiculous.

13 – Dublin – Whelans 014780766

What they are saying about “We Used to Think The Freeway Sounded Like A River”:

4/5 Sunday Times, 7/10 NME, 4/5 Independent, 4/5 Daily Express 'Pretty much everything I've ever liked about guitar music…sounds perfect; now point me at the back catalogue' - Word 'A dreamy, reverb-laden masterpiece' - 5/5 Sunday Express 'Beautiful slices of Americana' - 4/5 Q 'Vlautin's gift for observational storytelling helps make this their finest record' - Mail On Sunday 'Raw, autobiographical brilliance' - 5/5 Uncut

About the books:
‘The comparisons with Steinbeck and Carver are richly deserved, yet Vlautin is a truly original voice. Lean On Pete is powerful, heartbreaking stuff. Just three novels in and Vlautin is already one of the best writers in America.’ Mark Billingham (English novelist) Described by Mojo as ‘one of America’s most fundamental artists in words and music’ Willy Vlautin is the author of two highly acclaimed novels, The Motel Life (2005) and Northline (2007) with film options on both novels in development with Guillermo Arriaga and Courtney Hunt respectively. An avid fan of horseracing, he can often be found writing behind a closed circuit monitor at Portland Meadows racetrack.

PRAISE FOR NORTHLINE:
‘Vlautin follows his excellent first novel The Motel Life with a raw tale of America’s underclass ... the cool clarity of Vlautin’s simple prose, perfectly listened-to dialogue and unsentimental realism hold reader gloom at bay ... All round Willy Vlautin is becoming one of America’s most fundamental artists in words and music.’ Mojo ‘Vlautin’s style shares something with Raymond Carver and even John Steinbeck in never using words for their own sake … His strength lies in his sympathy for those on the margins of American society ... it’s a pleasure to discover a songwriter who doesn’t assume he’s such a genius that his approach to writing lyrics can simply be transplanted into book-length fiction. Northline succeeds on many levels.’ Guardian

PRAISE FOR THE MOTEL LIFE:
‘A hugely compassionate, wildly original road movie of a novel ... The warm-hearted folksy balladeer proves he’s just as much at home on the printed page as he is behind a mic, with detailed yet understated drawings complementing the tale.’ Henry Sutton, Esquire ‘Not many people do anything similar over here, with the same sense of small town big-sky melancholy. So British readers looking for a shot of post-Beat generation blues should reach with confidence for Vlautin’s book. ... Serene and assured.’ Independent

2009 review, part Two: Sarah!

Gig of the year

Fleetwood Mac at Wembley Arena 30th October - in part due to an odd incident where Lindsey Buckingham laughed at me for stroking his shoe even though it was my friend SHANTI. And his snigger at me when I cried that it wasn't me. For someone who wears a t-shirt with his face on pretty much every other day (ok, every day) and worships at his guitar it was a pretty amazing/weird moment. Also loved playing his guitar and Shanti's desperate cries to get Stevie's attention. Oh, and the music, obviously. Never thought I'd see them play Sara. I also though Nico Muhly was incredible at ATP in May.

Fleetwood Mac - Sisters of The Moon, live 1982 Mirage tour

Album of the year

Cass McCombs - Catacombs.
He is so underrated. I'm convinced that the UK will come to its senses, albeit 5 years late. It's a real grower too. I've been excited about a lot of other albums this year only for them to get boring pretty quickly but this is for keeps.

Cass McCombs- You Saved My Life

Disappointment of the year

My friend's gorgeous puppy died. RIP coal.
Not getting one of Lindsey Buckingham's plectrums. Lindsey, if you are out there, I want a plectrum. And come to the UK and play solo too.

Tip for 2010

Veronica Falls - genius 4 piece from ex member of The Royal We. Listen to the brilliant Found Love in A Graveyard or catch them live: http://www.myspace.com/veronicafallshard

Archie Bronson Outfit - they FINALLY return with a 3rd album 'Coconut' after the acclaim (Mojo's albums of the year #5 /Southbank Show Award) of their second, Derdang Derdang. They're playing a small album warm-up show at The Lexington on January 27th and tour in March.

Quarantine the Past: The Best Of Pavement

You Lucky People!

Quarantine The Past: The Best Of Pavement comes out on Domino on Monday the 8th of March 2010. This fully re-mastered 23-track compilation will be available on double LP, CD and digital album formats. The tracks span the entirety of Pavement's career from 1989 to 1999, from the scratchy and mysterious sounds of their early vinyl-only releases to the rich, multilayered warmth of their final recordings. Although the compilation does not include any unreleased material, it definitely goes deeper than the "hits."

Preorder direct from Domino -www.dominorecordco.com/uk/releases/05-01-10/quarantine-the-past-the-best-of-pavement/

Quarantine The Past lands in stores as Pavement embark on their first live appearances since the fall of 1999. Dates begin in New Zealand on March 1 and continue through Australia, UK and Europe over the spring and summer, with 4 dates at London’s Brixton Academy in May and the band curating and performing at All Tomorrow’s Parties.
